Theodoriana

Theodoriana, a principal village of the Prefecture of Arta, "highly mountainous and severe in winter," is nestled in the heart of Tzoumerka, on the Epirus-Thessaly borders, seventy-five kilometers from Arta.

The approximately 400 houses are spread out and clustered into two continuous neighborhoods, on a windless slope between an altitude of 850 and 1,100 meters. In the center of the village, at the square with the imposing plane tree, the altitude reads 960 meters.
Further east and at a distance of four kilometers, on a leafy slope on the banks of the Acheloos river, some twenty-five houses make up Skarpari, the second settlement of Theodoriana.

Theodoriana is the historical continuation of the ancient Athamanian city "Theodoria," to which they owe their name.
The area of the community, 44 thousand stremmata, is surrounded by bare and inaccessible mountain peaks, with the highest peak being Katafidi (2,393 m.), and also includes the much-sung-about plateau of Kostilata, where thousands of sheep graze during the summer.
Theodoriana possesses a divine gift, which may be a unique asset in Greece: water. With two rushing rivers, tributaries of the Acheloos, surrounding it, and with the famous twin waterfalls of Theodoriana and dozens of springs, they constitute a natural paradise, with many alternative activities in nature, ideal for hiking and mountaineering excursions.
A point of reference for the residents of Theodoriana, as well as for many visitors, is the two-day Feast of the Dormition (August 15th). The religious procession descends on foot from the chapel of the Virgin Mary to the village square, and in the afternoon, after the village bells give the signal, everyone gathers in the square for the "Diplokangelo" dance accompanied by the melody of Kostilata. Two guesthouses, various cafes, and dining establishments featuring traditional cuisine, etc., operate in the village.
