Vourgareli is located on the southern side of Tzoumerka (Athamanian Mountains) at an altitude of 800 m. and is built on the foothills of Tzoumerka between two fir-covered hills that protect it like a natural embrace.

It is the main village and the seat of the Municipality of Central Tzoumerka. In Vourgareli there is a Health Center, a Police Station, the Town Hall, a Creative Activities Center, the Tzoumerka National Park Information Office, a Junior and Senior High School, a Traffic Park, a football field, a Supermarket, various shops, several hotels and taverns. Nearby cities are Arta, Ioannina, and Trikala. The two large rivers of the area, the Acheloos and the Arachthos, are nearby, as are the Mesochora dam and the artificial lake of Pournari.
The origin of the name is uncertain. It is speculated that it comes from the surname Vourgarelis, belonging to a lumberjack of the area, or from Bulgarian lumberjacks who settled in the area because of the forests and flowing waters, for the transport of timber to Arta.
Picturesque and traditional, it is surrounded by rich vegetation and is full of abundant springs and running waters that end up in two rivers on the edges of the village, a sign of Vourgareli's exceptional favor from nature itself.
Among the important attractions of the village are its stone arched bridges located in the Korai stream, at the Kamara location, at the large spring, as well as the famous Neraidogefyro (Fairy Bridge), the Leptokarya spring, the Monastery of Agios Georgios, the Byzantine Red Church, the waterfall at the Giannitsi location, and the traditional watermills in Palaiokatouno.
Unique in beauty is the raised paved square and the cobblestone path that leads to the stone-built fountains "Archonto" and "Krystallo." Tradition says that any stranger who drinks water from the fountains gets married in Vourgareli.
